Why did you choose to study abroad?
The idea has always been in the back of my mind. I have known people who have studied abroad and they always said it was the most amazing time of their life. I love to travel and meet new people and the idea of living in another country for an extended period of time was so exciting to me. Once I started researching and figuring out how to make this happen, I was hooked! I knew I would do everything I could to make this a reality. I love adventure, I love exploring and I love meeting people who are completely different from myself! What better way to do this than to live in another country and attend college there? I truly believe that the world is your classroom and broadening knowledge of different places makes you a more well-rounded individual. I also believe that learning acceptance comes through experience and making connections with different people gives you a better understanding of their lives. I chose to study abroad for many reasons, but ultimately I love to travel, wanted to experience different cultures, and meet amazing people.
Why did you choose your study abroad city?
The choice to study abroad in Port Elizabeth, South Africa was very easy and I knew from the beginning that that's where I wanted and needed to go. As silly as it sounds, I did a project in 5th grade and picked South Africa to study for an entire year. To say the least, I fell in love! I thought the history, culture, cuisine, landmarks, and wildlife were amazing and breathtaking. From that year on, I always said I would travel and live in the country! I chose Port Elizabeth because of its geographic location, and I really like Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and knew it would be a good fit for me!
What are you most looking forward to during your study abroad experience?
I am looking forward to so much, but I am especially excited to see the elephants. Don't get me wrong, I cannot wait to meet the people, try the food, see all the landmarks but elephants hold a special place in my heart. They have been my favorite animal since I knew they existed, or since I read "Elmer the Elephant" for the first time. I am very interested in the protection of elephants and am very involved with a number of organizations that do their best to protect them. I think they are amazing and I can hardly handle that I am going to be so close to them for five months, as well as having the ability to interact with them!
I love to be outdoors and do anything from hiking, kayaking, swimming, camping.. pretty much any activity that can be done outside! I also love to cook and bake, as it helps me relax! I love holidays and birthdays and like to decorate my whole (very small) apartment with each holiday, as well as entertain whenever I can! I am usually listening to music; you rarely find me without headphones in and I enjoy many different genres. My favorite band is The Red Hot Chili Peppers but I listen to all types of rock, pop, country, jazz and everything in-between! My family and friends are very important to me; I love helping and caring for people and just spending time together!
