It’s autumn, the leaves have turned shades of red and brown; some have already shed from the trees. The mountains of New England are a beautiful sight for the highway traveler and the air is crisp. Starbucks cups have gone red and pumpkin spice is king once again. A cup of hot chocolate warms my hand as I sit in the bleachers. The “Boys of Fall” take the field. Ah, but I am not in New England this year, I don’t have a chilly red nose or a snuggly…

Well, this is it. I have a couple more weeks in paradise, until I make the flight back home to the United States. Every day I wake up, it still blows my mind how I am still in Costa Rica. I just passed the three-month mark, but going over the rules of the house seems like it happened yesterday. Here’s how studying abroad has absolutely changed my life. Let’s go back to that first day, when I arrived in Costa Rica. One of my ultimate goals was…

I have become immersed in my family’s traditions and culture, but they still manage to make me feel at home. Decisions, Decisions Before arrival, CEA had all of their students fill out a survey that let us choose our preference for certain aspects of our home. Among these included diet restrictions/foods that you don’t like, number of students you…

Living in another country is weird. It is so different from the norm we call home. Missing home, people, and places are all a part of this expirience. While studying abroad is a rollercoaster with many amazing and exciting ups, the downs and the challenges that students often have to face and learn to grow from are all a part of the abroad experience too. “There’s no shame in homesickness—it means you come from a happy home.” -Downton Abbey It was just over two months through my study…

Picture the area you live in and think about all the street signs, numbers and specific addresses that help you figure out where you are. Now imagine all of them have disappeared. No more house numbers, big street signs or exact locations. In Costa Rica, the addresses are quite different. Specific locations use distances from common landmarks such as schools, churches or small businesses. For example: 200 meters south of the old white church, in the Zapote neighborhood. As you can imagine, this makes it a little bit…

Welcome to my new home: Costa Rica! Before coming abroad, I had little idea what to expect other than what I could think up in my imagination. If you are planning to or even considering coming to study abroad in San Jose, I hope this video will be helpful. This is a short tour of both my homestay and the Veritas University campus. While I had planned to give more of an explanation of what was going on in the video, I was unable to do so as…

Take a walk in my shoes: where I have traveled up and down Costa Rica’s beautiful coastlines. See what it’s like to be a student in a Costa Rican Marine Biology class, where we went on snorkeling field trips to the only coral reef in the country. Did you know it’s possible to take notes underwater? Feel how much energy a couple of locals can bring to an intense game of volleyball on the beach. Follow me as I guide you through my experiences involving beach activities and…

Not many people can turn down a trip to Panamá, but as Americans in Costa Rica, our VISAs prohibit us from staying in Costa Rica for more than 90 consecutive days. Being as awesome as they are, CEA took us on a four-day excursion to the beautiful island beaches of Panamá. On the Road Again The trip started with a six-hour bus ride from San José, Costa Rica to the border of Panamá. CEA offers a private, air-conditioned bus, where napping is encouraged. We were there in no…
